If you’re looking to explore and have a great time on trails, a 4x4 is a fantastic way to do it. Not only are these vehicles wonderfully versatile and effective, but they also give you a lot more room for passengers, letting you bring family and friends with you, even if they aren’t skilled ATV or UTV riders themselves.
There are a lot of reasons to consider getting a 4x4, from the added room and weight capacity (useful for cargo even when you don’t have a lot of other people on board) to the added stability and power included in many of these vehicles.
Of course, there are a lot of different models to choose from, and that can add some complications when you’re looking for the right 4x4 for your needs.
Don’t worry though! We’ve looked through some of the best models available right now, and chosen the best from that selection to make it easier to find the right model for your needs.
We’ve also included a short buying guide at the end of this article to help you narrow down your options and think about the features that matter most for your needs.
Top Rated 4-Seater Side-by-Side Models
There are a lot of 4-seater side-by-side options out there, but these are some of the best, both in terms of performance and the other features included in each model.
Here’s what you need to know to choose the right model for your needs.
Can-Am Maverick X3 Max X RS Turbo RR
The Can-Am Maverick X3 Max X RS Turbo RR is probably one of the best side-by-side models on the market, though it’s not quite as powerful as the next model on this list. It’s got a 195 horsepower engine, wide-set 30-inch tires, and a powerful suspension system to keep you comfortable on any trail at just about any speed.
FOX 2.5 Podium shocks on this model provide added handling performance and help make sure the vehicle can take just about anything. It’s more versatile for off-roading than your typical UTV, and, like the Polaris RZR Pro R we’re about to discuss, it’s widely considered one of the absolute best side-by-side models on the market.
There are nine different trim levels on this vehicle, so if this isn’t the perfect model for you, there are almost certainly other trim levels that will offer something closer to what you’re looking for. And, of course, you can always customize your vehicle even more once you own it.

Polaris RZR Pro R 4
The Polaris RZR is right up there with the Can-Am Maverick for having a reputation for high-performance riding and power. This is the kind of side-by-side that’s designed for adventuring, and ready for whatever you and the local trails can throw at it.
Depending on who you ask, it’s either going to be the RZR Pro R or the Maverick R that gets the top slot for the absolute best 4-seater on the market.
It’s got an incredibly powerful 1,997 cc four-cylinder engine, which boasts 225 horsepower. This model also comes with just about the best suspension you can get, which is a big part of what makes it such a beast on the trails.
Comfortable stadium-style seating also works to help cushion riders, which can make it easier to pull off the more difficult trails. Not that you’ll need the extra cushion when you’re riding in a vehicle with fully 29 inches of travel in the suspension.
That said, when you’re buying top-of-the-line equipment, you should expect top-of-the-line prices. Like the Maverick, the RZR Pro R comes at a cost.
Like most of the vehicles on this list, Thumper Fab already has a wide selection of accessories perfect for the Polaris RZR all picked out!
Honda Talon 1000x-4
Honda has also made a name for themselves when it comes to UTV side-by-sides, and their models are noted for being durable and easier to maintain, both good features if you’re looking to make your vehicle last as long as possible.
It’s got another powerful engine on it, 999cc, and is a comfortable ride at 64 inches wide.
The big draw to this side-by-side isn’t top-of-the-line equipment though, unlike the other 4-seaters we’ve already discussed. Instead, it’s the intelligent design and maximized layout that helps make this 4-seater stand out.
Its intelligent traction management system and other advanced features help make things more comfortable while also making your job a little easier in the driver’s seat.
Kawasaki Teryx KRX 1000 4
This model is a little bit newer and less well-known than the ones we’ve already discussed. But that only makes them more impressive given that the Teryx already has a bit of a reputation for performance and quality in UTV communities.
Like all of the vehicles we’ve mentioned so far, it features long travel suspension for a smoother and more comfortable ride, even when you’re pushing the limits of what the vehicle can do.
It’s also got a durable frame designed to handle anything, a wide set, chunky grip tires, and comfortable seating for everyone in the vehicle. In fact, of all the vehicles we’ve mentioned so far, this one probably offers the most comfortable ride and the most comfortable seating by far.
However, this model is a little underpowered compared to the other vehicles on this list, and it’s also louder than most. So, you’re getting a more comfortable ride, but there are trade-offs when it comes to the performance of the vehicle.
Polaris Ranger Crew XP 1000
If you’re looking for more of a utility model rather than one of the ultimate sports models, the Polaris Ranger Crew XP 1000 is a good choice. This vehicle might only have 82 horsepower, but that’s plenty when you consider the other features.
The engine is incredibly dependable and gives you up to 1000 lbs. hauling capacity and 2,500 lbs. towing capacity as well.
For trail riding, this 4-seater is a little less powerful and doesn’t offer as much speed, but it still has a good suspension system and high ground clearance. So it works both as a recreational vehicle and as a utility vehicle at home.
Can-Am Defender Max
This model comes with an impressive 8 trim levels, giving you a lot of versatility and customization options even before you get the vehicle at home and ready for more customization.
The Can-Am Defender Max is also one of the biggest trail riding models you can get and has room for 6 people, not just 4.
Of course, it’s not quite as comfortable as a traditional 4-seater, but you’re looking for utility and adventure, right?
Like the Ranger Crew we already covered, it has a max output of 82 horsepower, but the torque is the most impressive part of its performance, with 2,500 lbs. towing capacity. However, this is also one of the most expensive models you can get, and, like a lot of utility vehicles, it’s one of the louder options on the market.
CF Moto UForce 1000 XL
Last but certainly not least, the CF Moto UForce 1000 XL is one of the best value vehicles you can get of its type and class. It can also seat up to six people, and pretty comfortably at that. When it comes to safety features and driver assists, the CF Moto UForce is also well equipped, better than the average for a 4-seater.
This 4-seater is also a good bit more affordable than most, but that does come with a few drawbacks worth mentioning. For one thing, the clutch is a bit jerky and can be tricky for newer riders or people who aren’t as familiar with manual driving. The throttle is also a little slow in the 0-15 mph range, though its performance improves from there.
But, once you get going, it's trail performance and off-roading versatility match more expensive models.
Reliable 4-Seater Side-by-Side Brands to Try
Can-Am and Polaris are both two of the most recognizable names in 4-seaters and there are good reasons for that distinction. Both brands offer a range of vehicles designed both for functionality and adventure, making them some of the more versatile brands as well as some of the best.
Kawasaki is also making a name for themselves, alongside Honda, for more affordable and easy-to-maintain vehicles.
That said though, almost any brand has good options available, depending on what kind of vehicle you’re looking for, what you want it to do, and the price range you’re comfortable with spending.
What to Look For in a 4-Seater Side-by-Side?
There are a few things to consider when you’re looking at a 4-seater.
A lot of people go straight to the engine and suspension system, which can be a good place to start depending on your goals. More powerful engines lead to a more exciting ride, as long as you have the suspension system to handle the challenge.
But it’s also important to consider the safety of the vehicle. What kind of roll cage does it offer? Are the seats and harnesses comfortable and easy to use? Is there enough space for the people you’re most likely to want to take with you?
It’s also important to ask yourself if you’re buying your 4-seater purely for the adventure of riding the vehicle, or if you want or need it to work as a utility vehicle as well. If you need towing power or other features, it’s important to make sure you aren’t just getting a sports model.
Other features are a little less important. Remember that most of these vehicles are designed to give you the best possible trail and off-roading performance they can manage, while also making it easy for you to customize and add additional features if you want them.
